Everybody, Somebody, Nobody, Anybody

I have got an e-mail, in Portuguese, with the text below, and thought that it would be interesting to translate it into English for you.

When we talk about translations, we must remember that there are two kinds: the literal translation and the literary translation. Sometimes both produce the same result, but we must also remember that literal translations are good only to show the student the meaning of every single word in the sentence. The literary translation, on the other hand, provides you with the true meaning of the sentence, not taking in consideration the meaning of every single word, by itself.

One simple example is: De grão em grão a galinha enche o papo.
Literal translation: From grain in grain, the hen fills the esophagus. 
(Essa frase é um horror e um falante nativo da língua inglesa vai ter dificuldades para se dar conta do que estamos tentando dizer).

 Literary translation: Small winnings make a heavy purse, or Every little helps, or Little drops of water, little grains of sand make mighty oceans and pleasant land, or Grain by grain, and the hen fills her belly (essa última é a mais parecida com o provérbio em português, embora a palavra belly signifique barriga).

Repito: a boa tradução é aquela que transmite a ideia original.

A tradução literal sempre fica devendo algo, pois ela transmite o significado de cada palavra isoladamente. A tradução literal é útil para que o aluno entenda palavra por palavra o que está sendo dito. Vamos então ao texto e a sua tradução literária:

Era uma vez quatro indivíduos que se chamavam todos, alguém, qualquer um e ninguém. Existia um importante trabalho a ser feito, e pediram a todos para fazê-lo. Todos tinham certeza de que alguém o faria. Qualquer um poderia tê-lo feito, mas na realidade ninguém o fez. Alguém se zangou, pois era trabalho de todos! Todos pensaram que qualquer um poderia tê-lo feito e ninguém duvidava de que alguém o faria. No fim das contas, todos fizeram críticas a todos porque ninguém tinha feito o que alguém poderia ter feito.

Moral da história:

Sem querer recriminar ninguém, seria bom que todos fizessem aquilo que deve fazer sem alimentar esperança de que alguém vá fazê-lo em seu lugar... A experiência mostra que lá onde se espera alguém, geralmente não se encontra ninguém. Estou repassando a todos a fim de que todos possam repassá-lo a alguém sem esquecer-se de ninguém.

Tradução:

Once upon a time, there were four individuals named everybody, somebody, anybody, and nobody. There was an important task to be done, and everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure that anybody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but, in fact, nobody did it. Somebody got angry, because it was everybody’s task. Everybody thought that anybody could have done it, and nobody doubted that somebody would do it. In the end, everybody criticized everybody because nobody had done what somebody could have done.
